Everyone who knows me knows I love coffee and tea. I get gift cards on my birthday, mother’s day, Christmas etc. for coffee/tea shops. I can drink coffee day or night it doesn’t affect my sleep. As for tea I prefer it at night.
Want to know what my top 5 must haves for tea lovers are? Then head over to my post here. It will open in a new window so you don’t lose your spot on this one.
Growing up my mom never had tea bags in her cupboard…like ever. I don’t remember ever seeing a teabag as a kid. The only teas I knew were the ones she “cooked” in a pot. Little did I know that those were the best teas. Best in flavor and quality.
Those teas I grew up with were not made for the same reasons I make mine today. I remember her making chamomile tea when our stomachs were upset, for instance. She would also make lemongrass or peppermint when we were feeling sick with a cold. Fun fact: to this day my mom still has fresh lemongrass and peppermint planted in her garden.
Cinnamon is also a very common tea for us to drink. My father is not a big coffee drinker but during the “harsh” Florida winters that’s his favorite drink. So in other words he only drinks it about 2-3 days per year lol. In some parts of Mexico, it’s very common to mix coffee and cinnamon tea with milk and sugar. OMG its delicious, if you haven’t tried it stop reading this and go make yourself a cup. And yes we use the actual sticks just boil them away. Whenever I visit my mom, I have a cup with a splash of milk and a teaspoon of Nescafe. Don’t ask why but all Mexicans love Nescafe…im not a big fan but I do like it mixed with cinnamon tea.
The other tea that we use a lot is hibiscus tea. Now this tea I can only drink cold. We make a hibiscus sweet iced tea. If I come across any tea that has hibiscus I don’t drink it hot for this same reason. My palette is just used to a sweet and cold hibiscus not hot. I know I’m weird.
Even though as a child I had these teas growing up I never thought of myself as a tea drinker. Tea for me was given when I was “sick”, I never thought of loving tea as an adult. I started venturing into teas about 7 years ago, thanks to Teavana. That soul sucking wall of theirs was IT for me. Now before you go screaming and yelling that they didn’t have the best teas let me just say I agree. Some of their teas were straight forward, but of course I thought those were boring and got sucked into their Tea Blends. There is nothing wrong with tea blends if you know every single ingredient that goes into the blend. Sometimes these “high end” tea stores have “additives” and “artificial sweeteners” that just lessens the benefits behind the tea.
Either way thank you…
Thanks to that tea shop I realized that there were other reasons to drink tea besides feeling sick. I realized that I actually loved the feeling I got from drinking it. As time went by I caught myself researching different kinds of teas. I learned that there are different steeping times depending on the type of tea. Apart from loose leaf I also enjoy teabags and sachets. I’ve also learned that I prefer the latter.
